Great Lizards
The world will eat you whole
The world is rapacious.
The world will eat your light
if you let it, catch your fear
by the root, lick & swallow you whole.
Maya is waiting for seduction
any slip-up, the way we give
everything of importance away.
Woman, I watched the great lizard
take you from the ankle
a snake devouring a goat
gulping inch by inch until downed
into the belly of the beast.
No doubt, when you’re sick of being eaten
someone will slice it open
attempt to drag you out —
they won’t know you were in love with
your own consumption
a creature drooling just for you.
How important the world makes us feel —
a moment we mistake for eternity.
It works this way with most people.
