Stars of Deception
To the night sky we pay homage
endlessly endowing this fixture
of nature, firmament of awe.
Occasionally, the Heavens open
& throw down
a ladder.
Do you know how many refusals
& false dawns
come out of that sky?
I am struck how the stars dazzle
but more how there we stay
as if a spell laminates the globe
& none can see the dome
of their own limits
get past its miraculous display.
We are reminded ‘all that glitters
is not gold,’ yet plough on.
Perhaps a bronze star on the collar?
How noble we humans are in causes
not our own but others’.
